Announcing The DevOps Handbook Second Edition

By IT Revolution

We’re delighted to announce that over the last year we’ve been hard at work updating the iconic The DevOps Handbook! Originally written over the span of five years, authors Gene Kim, Jez Humble, Patrick Debois, and John Willis created the go-to guide for embarking on a DevOps transformation in any industry. Since the original publication in 2016, the book has gone on to sell more than 250,000 copies and be translated into 11 languages.

As the five year anniversary approached, we decided it was time to revisit this classic and see if it was ready for an updated. After all, a core tenet of DevOps is continuous learning. After five years of DevOps spreading across industries and throughout the world, there must be new learnings that should be codified into this enduring book.

And of course, there were.

To help collect these new learnings and provide clear evidence of their effectiveness, we brought on Nicole Forsgren, Partner at Microsoft Research and Head of the Developer Velocity Lab, as well as one of the lead researchers for the State of DevOps Reports (first with Puppet and later with DORA) and coauthor of the Shingo Publication Award-winning book Accelerate.

Over the last five years, Dr. Forsgren’s research has confirmed that most of the practices described in the The DevOps Handbook lead to improved outcomes like speed and stability of software releases, as well as reducing burnout and deployment pain.

This fully updated and expanded second edition includes:

  • New foreword and research from Nicole Forsgren, PhD.
  • Updated afterwords from all five coauthors.
  • 15 new case studies—including Fannie Mae, Adidas, American Airlines, US Air Force, and more.
  • New resource sections at the end of each part.
  • 100+ pages of new or updated content in total.
  • Fully redesigned interior.

In 2021, it is clearer than ever before that every business is a technology business and every leader is a technology leader. DevOps and the practices in this book provide a way forward.

“The need for DevOps is even greater today, as organizations need to deliver value quickly, safely, securely, and reliably to their customers and users. To do this, they need to transform their internal processes and leverage technology to deliver value—using DevOps practices. This is true for organizations around the world and across all industry verticals,” Nicole Forsgren.

Over the coming weeks as we lead up to the publication of this new edition, we’ll be sharing new case studies, practices, and more here on the IT Revolution blog. Stay tuned.
