Leading up to DevOps Enterprise Summit 2018 Las Vegas, we’ll be releasing our newest DevOps resources to our community on a weekly basis.

Each of these resources come to you straight from the DevOps Enterprise Forum, where more than 50 technology leaders and thinkers gather for three days to create written guidance on the best-known methods for overcoming the top obstacles in the DevOps Enterprise community.

Large enterprises are traditionally organized by functional silos as opposed to the end-to-end flow of delivery across teams. However, because they are managed to optimize vertically for specific outcomes, the multiple work management systems used in these environments can create long-term inefficiencies.

In this week’s resource, (download here) we’ll be focusing on enterprise practitioners and management leaders who have multiple work management systems that their teams deal with every day. In the following 5 sections, we hope to show how making work visible can help enterprises break down those inefficiencies.

  • THE PROBLEM: We’ll begin by exploring the inefficiencies of a multiple work management system, including unplanned work, conflicting priorities, and communication breakdowns between business people and IT people.
  • SOLUTION-GUIDING PRINCIPLES: In this section, we suggest some guiding principles to help make work visible so that others can see key risks and problems.
  • COUNTER MEASURES: Next, we will describe a number of the approaches that have been used by different companies to address the problems caused by lack of visibility of work across the entire value stream for a product.
  • BENEFITS: We’ll dive into how achieving better work visibility can also improve flow and system mechanics, as well as gain better customer visualization of capacity, velocity, and IT priorities.
  • CASE STUDIES: Finally, we’ll look at two separate cases of how making work visible has had lasting impacts on those organizations.

The authors on each of these resources will be prominent figures in the industry, and on this particular one, we have five industry leaders working together. They include:

  • Scott Prugh, Chief Architect & SVP Software Engineering, CSG
  • Dominica DeGrandis, Director, Digital Transformation, Tasktop
  • Rosalind Radcliffe, Distinguished Engineer, Chief Architect for DevOps for z Systems, IBM
  • Pat Birkeland, Business Analytics Platform Services Operations Lead, Boeing
  • Keanen Wold, DevOps Transformation/DevOps CoE & Developer Practice leader, Delta Airlines

Here are two presentations from authors on this week’s resource.

If you’re eager to continue learning about these topics and more, see how you can be a part of DevOps Enterprise Summit 2018 Las Vegas. We spend three days talking with the leaders of large, complex organizations implementing DevOps principles and practices, with the goal to give leaders (like you) the tools and practices they need to develop and deploy software faster and to win in the marketplace.
