Featured Resource: Expanding Pockets of Greatness

By IT Revolution

Leading up to DevOps Enterprise Summit 2017 San Francisco, we’ll be releasing our most valuable DevOps resources to our community on a weekly basis.

Each of these resources come to you straight from the DevOps Enterprise Forum, where more than 50 technology leaders and thinkers gather for three days to create written guidance on the best-known methods for overcoming the top obstacles in the DevOps Enterprise community.

How do you build momentum and go from a few islands of DevOps goodness to a tipping point where the entire organization embraces common DevOps methods?

This resource provides guidance to leaders (change agents) who see DevOps activity in different teams, groups, or departments in their organization and are looking to build community and promote growth. We hope to help you connect the pockets of DevOps goodness that may already exist within your organization and harness them to drive change.

We will outline some strategies and tactics, focused on four core areas, to help provide structured guidance on where to start and where those efforts will evolve.

  • Share: Provide opportunities to share knowledge and make success visible — We begin by looking at sharing opportunities and how they can be used to advertise the benefits of DevOps without being pushy. Hypotheticals can be debated endlessly, but a case study that shows a tangible benefit gets attention and can turn naysayers into allies.
  • Communicate: Create common communication channels — In this section, we discuss how you can begin making it easy for people to find the information they need, share knowledge they’ve discovered, and communicate with like-minded people.
  • Standardize: Increase standardization and consistency of processes and tools — Standardization can be a dirty word when talking about innovation. However, there are times when the lack of any standards can impede innovation or result in inefficiency across an organization. Here, we discuss the importance of identifying areas where standardization can be applied while also respecting individual flexibility when required.
  • Empower: Develop leadership capacity — In our final section, we discuss how to identify the key individuals whose efforts stand out from their peers, and how you can provide opportunities for them to increase their impact as your organization matures.

The authors on each of these resources will be prominent figures in the industry, and on this particular one, we have four industry leaders working together. They include:

  • Josh Atwell, Developer Advocate, NetApp
  • Carmen DeArdo, Technology Director, DevOps Leader, Nationwide Insurance
  • Jeff Gallimore, Partner and Co-founder, Excella Consulting
  • Thomas A. Limoncelli, SRE Manager, Stack Overflow, Inc.

Here is an amazing presentation from an author on this week’s resource.

If you’re eager to continue learning about these topics and more, come see how you can be a part of DevOps Enterprise Summit 2017 San Francisco. We spend three days talking with the leaders of large, complex organizations implementing DevOps principles and practices, with the goal to give leaders (like you) the tools and practices they need to develop and deploy software faster and to win in the marketplace.
