State of DevOps Survey needs you!

You probably already know how proud I am to be associated with the annual State of DevOps Survey and Report — over the last five years, working with Alanna Brown, Dr. Nicole Forsgren, Jez Humble, Nigel Kersten, and Puppet, we’ve gathered data on over 20,000 respondents, to better understand the health and habits of organizations using DevOps principles and patterns.

You may be thinking, haven’t we already learned everything about DevOps? And so why should I take the survey again?

In my opinion, we still have so much to learn about DevOps! To show you how my own understanding of DevOps has evolved year over year, here’s some of my own personal “aha” moments from past reports:

• 2013: Agility and reliability aren’t mutually exclusive! High deployment frequency and low deployment lead times correlate with low MTTR and high change success rates.
• 2014: DevOps improves not just IT Performance (described above), but also Organizational Performance (e.g., ability for the organization to achieve profitability, market share, and productivity goals). We also found statistical differences of stock market capitalization between high and low performers!
• 2015: We learned how DevOps affects burnout and job satisfaction, and how critical continuous integration and delivery practices are. And we also found that high performers increase deployments per day linearly, even as they increase the number of developers!
• 2016: We found that DevOps improves security outcomes, and that high performers have higher employee Net Promoter Scores (i.e., more likely to recommend their organizations as a great place to work to friends)

So this year, the research continues! What I’m most excited about is how we’re zooming in even further on how architecture enables fast flow, as well as what is required from leadership and management to achieve any DevOps outcomes.
