Greeted by the rain, attendees made their way to day two of DOES17 London. After some brief opening remarks by Gene and Paul, participants were treated to some fantastic opening sessions by Jonathan Fletcher of HISCOX; Suzette Johnson and Robin Yeman from aerospace companies, Northrup Grumman and Lockheed Martin; and, also Dominica DeGrandis from LeanKit.
Breakout sessions were well-attended, many standing room only throughout the rest of the morning and afternoon. Day two of the “Ask the Experts” session was another engaging opportunity for attendees to have a forum to ask follow-on questions and continue on their learning journey from the morning’s plenary speakers.
The afternoon sessions continued on the same path as presentations from a variety of companies and organizations shared best practices, tips and ideas on topics ranging from how to scale globally to measurement to designing your teams. Again, the DevOps Workshop was a huge success, attracting a large roomful of people who broke into individual table groups and worked through questions, real-world challenges and issues surrounding modern tech practices around DevOps and finding ways to overcome them.

2017 State of DevOps Report
The final General Session was a key highlight of the overall conference with Jez Humble, Nigel Kersten, Dr. Nicole Forsgren and Gene Kim sharing key takeaways from the Puppet 2017 State of DevOps Report findings, co-authored by DevOps Research and Assessment (DORA) and sponsored by Amazon Web Services (AWS), Atlassian, Deloitte, Electric Cloud, HPE, Splunk and Wavefront. With survey responses from more than 27,000 technical professionals over the past six years, and from organizations of all sizes and within multiple industries, this year’s findings were truly a treat! Some of the most interesting findings in this year’s report that enterprises can use to improve performance, leadership and culture within their own organizations include:
- Automation boots performance — The highest performing organizations have automated 72 percent of all configuration management processes. Those same high performers spend much less time (28 percent) mired in manual configuration processes that stall innovation and deployments. By comparison, low performers are spending almost half of their time (46 percent) on manual configuration.
- Leadership matters in digital transformation — For the first time, the report considered leadership types and how they impact performance. The results found that high-performing teams have leaders with the strongest behaviors across five characteristics. These include vision, inspirational communication, intellectual stimulation, supportive leadership and personal recognition. Teams that have transformational leaders fall into the high performance category. Leaders that exhibit a lower percentage of these characteristics tend to have lower performing teams.
- Lean product management practices drives higher organizational performance — For the second year in a row, the report looked at lean product management practices to see if changes upstream in the product management process affect business outcomes downstream. Lean product management practices help teams ship features that customers want, more frequently. This faster delivery cycle lets teams experiment, creating a feedback loop with customers, benefiting the entire organization.
Gene and Paul wrapped it up at the end with a few closing remarks and encouraging the dialogue to continue later this year at DOES17 San Francisco where there will be more user experiences, continuations of DevOps journeys and community sharing. Stay tuned for more updates on that front!
