Whew! What an amazing second day at the DevOps Enterprise Summit in San Francisco today! It was another jam-packed schedule full of talks covering the themes of: Getting Business Buy-In, Security & Compliance, Ops & Next-Generation Leadership, Architecture, Technology for Technology Leaders and of course, Experience Reports! Topo Pal and Jennifer Brady from Capital One got the day started off right—several people are now adopting the “JFDI” acronym. Tisson Matthew from Alignment Healthcare followed that up with some powerful messages about the Amazon Prime Now story—one of the top insights from this unicorn could be summed up by the following: “At Amazon, every team continuously deploys; very little coordination between teams, by design.” The final keynote of the morning featured an old friend and new speaker at DevOps Enterprise Summit, Jason Cox and Brian Scott from The Walt Disney Company. The deep dive into technology was astounding—we definitely learned about the use of containers and how they can help make the “magic happen.”
After the keynotes ended, the breakout sessions were buzzing. With so many options, attendees definitely needed to choose their schedule and path wisely. But don’t worry, if you missed any sessions, you can view the slide repository on GitHub here >>>. People learned about many new DevOps patterns and practices from leaders in healthcare, financial services, retail and technology—just to name a few! There were plenty of technical dives into the technology and processes—several sessions in particular focused on how to integrate security measures into the DevOps initiative and how to architect and a panel of experts explored the many facets of DevSecOps.
The day came to an end with two more keynote sessions from our friends Dr. Nicole Forsgren, CEO of DevOps Research and Assessment (DORA) and John Allspaw, CTO/Researcher of Adaptive Capacity Labs. Forsgren highlighted lots of data about high-performing organizations and how transformational leaders are able to drive, support, and amplify the work in organizations. Allspaw highlighted how the cognitive activities of people, working with representations of systems, are what really make the business work. Additionally, he expanded on the value of postmortems and how the incidents of yesterday form the architectures of tomorrow.
Well, that wraps Day 2—read on for more top quotes, takeaways, and photos from the day. More reminders from Day 3 as well!
