Featured Resource: Mythbusting DevOps in the Enterprise

By IT Revolution

Leading up to DevOps Enterprise Summit 2017 San Francisco, we’ll be releasing our most valuable DevOps resources to our community on a weekly basis.

Each of these resources come to you straight from the DevOps Enterprise Forum, where more than 50 technology leaders and thinkers gather for three days to create written guidance on the best-known methods for overcoming the top obstacles in the DevOps Enterprise community.

Anyone leading a company through a DevOps transformation will encounter minor to significant internal skepticism or lack concrete experience.

We decided to confront these issues head on, listing the most common leadership and cultural traps for our target audience. Ultimately, we aim to provide high-level reassurance to technology leaders that transformation in enterprise environments is both feasible and desirable.

Therefore, we will be busting 6 of the most common myths surrounding the adaptation of DevOps practices in an enterprise environment, they are:

Myth No. 1: “There’s no direct customer/business value for adopting DevOps practices.”

Myth No. 2: “There’s no significant return on investment in applying DevOps principles to legacy applications.”

Myth No. 3: “DevOps only works with ‘unicorn’ companies and not traditional enterprise businesses like ours.”

Myth No. 4: “Improvement via DevOps principles requires spare time and people that we simply don’t have.”

Myth No. 5: “We have regulatory and compliance requirements that preclude the adoption of DevOps principles.”

Myth No. 6: “We don’t have any problems that adopting DevOps principles and practices would fix.”

The authors on each of these resources will be prominent figures in the industry, and on this particular one, we have 13 industry leaders working together. They include:

  • Steve Barr, Executive Director, Operations at CSG International
  • Ross Clanton, Senior Group Manager, Target
  • Jason Cox, Director of Systems Engineering, The Walt Disney Company
  • Jason DuMars, Senior Director of Technical Operations, SendGrid
  • Damon Edwards, Managing Partner DTO Solutions, Inc
  • Gary Gruver, President, Practical Large Scale Agile LLC
  • Nigel Kersten, CTO, Puppet
  • Gene Kim, Author and Researcher
  • Courtney Kissler, Vice President of E-Commerce and Store Technologies, Nordstrom
  • Heather Mickman, Senior Group Manager, Target
  • Tapabrata Pal, Product Manager, CapitalOne
  • Scott Prugh, Chief Architect, CSG International
  • John Willis, Director of Ecosystem Development, Docker

Here are two amazing presentations from authors on this week’s resource.

If you’re eager to continue learning about these topics and more, come see how you can be a part of DevOps Enterprise Summit 2017 San Francisco. We spend three days talking with the leaders of large, complex organizations implementing DevOps principles and practices, with the goal to give leaders (like you) the tools and practices they need to develop and deploy software faster and to win in the marketplace.
