Featured Resource: Modernizing IT Operation in the Age of DevOps

By IT Revolution

Leading up to DevOps Enterprise Summit 2018 Las Vegas, we’ll be releasing our newest DevOps resources to our community on a weekly basis.

Each of these resources come to you straight from the DevOps Enterprise Forum, where more than 50 technology leaders and thinkers gather for three days to create written guidance on the best-known methods for overcoming the top obstacles in the DevOps Enterprise community.

DevOps adoption continues to rise as enterprises migrate to the cloud as part of their digital transformation initiatives. The combination of DevOps and cloud infrastructure, however, is disrupting the traditional job expectations of enterprise infrastructure and operations (I&O) professionals.

The days of physically provisioning servers and environments are quickly coming to a close. Provisioning cloud environments are done through code and related API calls, and as a result, I&O professionals are being asked to do things outside of their comfort zone.

Unfortunately, many organizations are finding that their I&O professionals are not able to or willing to acquire this new skill set, forcing these organizations to reduce the headcount in IT Operations and transition the headcount to Development.

However, there is hope! This new paradigm does not need to be a path to extinction. Instead, it should be seen as an opportunity for evolution.

In this week’s resource, (download here) we’re offering guidance for I&O professionals so they can evolve their skill set and become an integral part of DevOps initiatives and competent in cloud infrastructure code, for it is the view of these authors, that the expertise of I&O professionals is needed in DevOps processes.

The authors on each of these resources will be prominent figures in the industry, and on this particular one, we have eight industry leaders working together. They include:

  • Josh Atwell, Developer Advocate and Solutions Marketing Lead, DevOps, NetApp
  • Jason Cox, Director, Platform & Systems Reliability Engineering, Disney
  • Damon Edwards, Chief Product Officer, Rundeck
  • Ron Forrester, VP, Nike.com Engineering, Nike
  • Jayne Groll, CEO, DevOps Institute
  • Mark Imbriaco, Technical Director, Operations and Reliability, Epic Games
  • Mark Schwartz, Enterprise Strategist, AWS
  • Scott Willson, Director of Product Marketing Release Automation, Automic Software

Here are two presentations from authors on this week’s resource.

If you’re eager to continue learning about these topics and more, see how you can be a part of DevOps Enterprise Summit 2018 Las Vegas. We spend three days talking with the leaders of large, complex organizations implementing DevOps principles and practices, with the goal to give leaders (like you) the tools and practices they need to develop and deploy software faster and to win in the marketplace.
